About Willow Springs Golf Course

Willow Springs is the old tournament course of San Antonio's city system, just east of downtown and across the street from the Frost Bank Center. Emil Loeffler and John McGlynn designed it in the 1920s, the same pair of greenkeeper-architects who helped develop Oakmont in Pennsylvania from 1916. The course says it hosted the Texas Open ten times between 1927 and 1949, and Ben Hogan (1946) and Sam Snead (1948) both won it here.

The fairways are open and the greens are big, but it's long: 7,029 yards from the back tees, and several holes turn hard, so it helps to know where the corners are. The hole everybody knows is the 2nd, a 655-yard par 5 that doglegs right with water on the left and Salado Creek on the right. It's the longest hole in the city, and it takes three good shots to get home. The course opens up after that.

The course closed on March 31, 2025, for a 120-day re-grassing and reopened on August 8, 2025, with all 18 greens, approaches, fairways and tees redone, trees trimmed, brush cleared and new seating added. There's no driving range, so give yourself a few swings before that long 2nd.
