Olmos Basin Golf Course

George Hoffman's 1963 layout in the Olmos Dam flood basin, rebuilt by Jeffrey Blume in 2021. A creek runs through it, and it's the city's busiest course.

About Olmos Basin Golf Course

Olmos Basin is a City of San Antonio course just north of Brackenridge Park, off Highway 281, run by the non-profit Alamo City Golf Trail. It's the Trail's most-played course, and the location is a big reason: it's minutes from downtown. It plays to par 72 and stretches to 7,038 yards from the tips (73.9 rating, 135 slope), with five sets of tees down to 4,878.

The ground has a story. The course sits in the basin behind Olmos Dam, which the city built in 1925-26 after the September 1921 flood tore through downtown. The basin is normally empty and used for parks and golf, except when it's needed to hold floodwater.

George Hoffman designed it and it opened in 1963. Jeffrey D. Blume, ASGCA, redid the whole thing, and it reopened in November 2021 with a renovated clubhouse. Expect tree-lined fairways, a creek that crosses many holes, long par 3s, reachable par 5s and greens with plenty of movement. The course calls the 2nd its hardest hole: a par 4 that doglegs right through trees to a long, uphill approach. It has hosted many Men's and Women's City Amateur Championships.

The map survey counts water near nine holes, six forced carries, nine doglegs and about 43 bunkers. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data. There's no full driving range, just hitting nets.
