About Middlefield Golf Course
Middlefield runs along the Row River, just off I-5 at Exit 174, with mature landscaping around it. Gene "Bunny" Mason, a Pacific Northwest designer and PGA pro, laid it out for the Woodard family, who built it with the Middlefield Estates neighborhood after selling their Village Green resort across Row River Road. It opened in 1991 with winter rye fairways and bentgrass greens, on land where the Hemenway family's dairy cows used to graze.
The city owns it for an unusual reason. Cottage Grove bought it for its water rights and to meet state rules on cooling treated wastewater before it reaches the river: effluent from the treatment plant now fills the irrigation pond, which the Sentinel says saves about 50 million gallons of fresh water every season. The perimeter cart path doubles as a trail for walkers, joggers and cyclists.
The 2024 ice storm hit hard, damaging more than half the trees and closing the course for about two and a half months, and the course says the result is a more open layout. It's a busy, local place: the Men's Club plays Mondays and Thursdays all year, the Women's Club plays Wednesdays from April through October, and 10 to 13 charity tournaments come through every year.
