Diamond Woods Golf Course

Built by two brothers on land bought with one's pro baseball pay. An open, level front, a rolling tree-lined back, and water on seven holes.

About Diamond Woods Golf Course

Diamond Woods is a family course with a baseball story. Jeff Doyle played for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1983 and the Nankai Hawks in Japan in 1984 and 1985, and that money bought the land in 1984. His brother Greg, who had worked construction and irrigation at Pumpkin Ridge and Trysting Tree, quit his job in 1994 to design and build it himself. The first nine opened in 1997, the second in 1998. The name is baseball's diamond plus the Woods family, who sold them the property.

The two nines play differently. The front is open and fairly level; the back moves into trees on rolling ground. Water is in play on seven holes, and Mount Jefferson and the Cascades sit across the Willamette Valley behind it all. It's over 7,000 yards from the tips, but there are five sets of tees, so pick the right box. The course record is a 63 by Matt Jones at the 2002 Nationwide qualifier; Webb Simpson shot 64 to win the 2008 one.

The range is covered, more than 325 yards and slightly uphill, with eight stalls and grass tees in season, so it works in the rain. The deli takes phone orders from the 8th hole, and The Inn at Diamond Woods on the property handles weddings and stay-and-play trips.
