About Desert Lakes Golf Course
Desert Lakes is Alamogordo's city-owned course, set at the base of the Sacramento Mountains, and it's really two nines with two personalities. The front is tree-lined parkland with big greens that move a little. The back, which the course calls "the desert nine," is cut out of the southern New Mexico desert, with cacti and desert plants off the fairways and the mountains out ahead of you.
The greens are large but subtle, and the water is the thing to watch: hazards come into play on 11 of the 18 holes. From the back tees it's 6,811 yards, and there are four sets of tees in all. Williams and Gill remodeled the course in 1996-97.
It's a year-round course. The course's own site puts summer highs in the 90s with moderate winters, so in July you'll want an early tee time. After the round there's the 19th Hole Bar and Grill.
