About Old Tappan Golf Course
Old Tappan's course was a civic project. In the early 1960s the borough's new Recreation Commission wanted a town-owned course for three reasons: recreation, keeping land open, and revenue. In a 1966 referendum voters approved a $600,000 bond to build it on 50 acres of farmland that the DeWolf family had owned for ten generations. It opened on July 4, 1969, and the Pascack Press calls it the first community-owned golf course in New Jersey.
The DeWolfs' farmhouse, built in 1704, still stands on its own acre on DeWolf Road, tucked between the 7th and 9th greens. The course is a par-35 nine with traditional tree-lined fairways and an easy walk, and Lake Tappan sits just beyond it. Locals call it the Jewel of Bergen County, and the grill and restaurant, with outdoor seating, is open to the public.
