Nebraska Golf Courses & Tee Times

Nebraska golf goes back at least to a six-hole round in 1887, and the Nebraska Amateur has been played since 1905. The state's best-known golfer is Johnny Goodman of South Omaha, who won five straight Nebraska Amateurs starting in 1929 and in 1933 became the last amateur to win the U.S. Open. A municipal course in Omaha carries his name. The modern chapter started in the Sandhills: Sand Hills Golf Club in Mullen, a private Coore and Crenshaw design established in 1994, was named No. 1 on Golfweek's 2022 list of modern courses.

Who runs public golf in Nebraska

Public golf in Nebraska's cities is run mostly by city parks departments. Lincoln runs five courses, including Holmes, which hosted the first Nebraska Junior Amateur in 1968, and Pioneers, which the city calls the oldest public course in Lincoln. Omaha's municipal courses include Elmwood Park, open since August 5, 1916. The Nebraska Golf Association (NebGolf), founded in 1966 at Lincoln Country Club, is the USGA allied association: it handles handicaps and course rating for more than 160 member clubs and 33,000 members, and runs 14 state championships and seven USGA qualifiers. Its FORE! program, started in 2012, let juniors play for $4 a round as of 2016, and it runs the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour with the Nebraska PGA Section.

Getting a tee time in Nebraska

Golf in Nebraska follows the seasons: spring openers and fall weekends are the busiest stretches, and summer mornings fill before afternoons.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.
