About Whitefish Lake Golf Club
Whitefish Lake is Montana's only 36-hole complex: the North Course, the original, and the South Course, with holes along Lost Loon Lake. The Whitefish Lake Golf Association, a not-for-profit, has run the golf on a break-even basis since the 1940s, and it says no taxpayer money has ever gone into the courses.
The story starts in the late 1920s, when locals led by D. P. Dedon bought 104 acres west of town for $1,600 to build a course. The city then won a grant to turn it into a golf course that doubled as an emergency landing strip, and WPA money paid for the course and the log clubhouse that served as the terminal. The Grand Opening Tournament was May 24, 1936. G. A. MacMillan of Helena added the Lake Nine in the early 1960s, and kids earned playing privileges by picking rocks off the fairways.
John Steidel remodeled the original 18, now the North, in 1983 and 1985. It got so popular that getting a tee time two days out meant standing in line by 4:30 a.m. Steidel came back to design the South, which opened in June 1994. It flooded in the wet spring of 1996, was raised more than four feet along the lake, and reopened in July 1998.
