Mississippi Gulf Coast Golf Courses & Tee Times

Golf on the Mississippi coast goes back to 1902, when Thomas Bendelow laid out hotel courses for the Mexican Gulf and Magnolia hotels. Jack Daray built the Biloxi Golf Club in 1918, and in March 1944 Great Southern in Gulfport held the Gulfport Open, a PGA event Jug McSpaden won by six with Byron Nelson third. Five of today's best-known public-access courses opened between 1986 and 2000: Windance by Mark McCumber, Arnold Palmer's The Bridges, Gil Morgan's The Oaks, Jack Nicklaus's Grand Bear and Davis Love III's Shell Landing. Up the road, Hattiesburg Country Club hosted the PGA Tour's Magnolia Classic from 1968 until the event moved to Madison in 1994.

Good weekend tee times in Mississippi Gulf Coast go fast, and the ones that come back later (cancellations, groups that shrink) aren't announced. Yoink watches the tee sheets at 14 public courses here, from Diamondhead, Columbia, Hattiesburg, Pascagoula and Pass Christian, and tells you the moment a time you want opens up.

The longest layout here is Grand Bear Golf Club at 7,204 yards.

Why tee times in Mississippi Gulf Coast are hard to get

Spring and fall are peak season in Mississippi Gulf Coast. In summer the heat pushes everyone toward early morning, so the first few hours of the day fill before anything else.

Each course releases its tee times on its own schedule, commonly a week or two out, with residents of town and county courses often booking first. Leagues, outings and members claim chunks of the sheet in advance, and whatever prime weekend times are left tend to go on release day.

When tee time cancellations happen

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.

  1. Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
  2. Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
  3. Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
  4. Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
  5. Widen the map. If your first choice is full, check the next town over. Diamondhead has 2 courses on Yoink and Columbia has 1.
