The Refuge Golf Course

Roy Case cut it from 200 acres of wetlands in 1998. Nathan Crace's rebuild added three new holes and was Golf Inc.'s 2021 Renovation of the Year runner-up.

About The Refuge Golf Course

The Refuge is Flowood's city-owned public course, and it earns the name: Roy Case carved it out of 200 acres of wetlands, moving more than 500,000 cubic yards of dirt to make its lakes and creeks. It opened in 1998 at about 6,600 yards and built a name as one of the better public courses in Mississippi, but the corridors were tight.

It closed in mid-2017 and stayed shut for more than two years while Nathan Crace of Watermark Golf rebuilt it. It reopened in April 2021 with three new holes, the nines flipped, TifEagle greens, new and renovated bunkers and new irrigation. Tees now run from about 4,000 to just over 7,000 yards, and the extra length took out some awkward short par 4s. Golf Inc. magazine named it runner-up for its 2021 Renovation of the Year, and GolfPass put it on its Golfer's Choice list of the best courses in Mississippi in 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.

Expect rolling hills, generous tees and smooth greens, and plan on about 4 hours 10 minutes. Troon manages it, and the 200-room Sheraton at The Refuge Hotel and Conference Center makes it an easy stay-and-play.

It's one of 12 courses Yoink watches in the Jackson & Central Mississippi area, and the closest alternative is Whisper Lake Country Club, about 4 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
