About Pete Brown Golf Facility

This is the course Jackson built in 1947 as Jackson Municipal, which everyone called the Muny. It later became Sonny Guy Golf Course, and in June 2019 it was renamed for Pete Brown. It plays nearly 6,700 yards from the blue tees, with generous fairways and mild rough, so it's a friendly round, and there's a driving range for warming up.

Brown grew up in Jackson and started out caddying at the Muny. At 19 he caught polio and spent a year paralyzed in a hospital, then learned to walk again and got his PGA card. In 1964 he won the Waco Turner Open in Oklahoma, the first African American to win a PGA event, and the same year he became the first Black player in the PGA Championship, tying for 33rd. In 1970 he won the Andy Williams San Diego Open at Torrey Pines in a playoff over Tony Jacklin. He went into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in the 2020 class.
