About Theodore Wirth Golf Club

Wirth is where public golf in Minneapolis started. The park board opened nine holes at Glenwood in June 1916, with clay tees and sand greens, and made it free that first year; more than 12,000 rounds got played anyway. The next season it was over 50,000, and by 1919 it was 18 holes. The greens didn't go to grass until 1935, and the course took Theodore Wirth's name in 1938, after the superintendent who ran the parks for almost 30 years.

It's two different nines. The front runs around Bassett Creek and a few man-made lagoons, with views of the downtown skyline; the back, redesigned in 1968, goes up into rolling hills and mature trees. Water is in play on 11 holes by the course's own count. From the blues it's a par 72 of 6,575 yards, and there are white, gold, red and junior tees below that.

Wirth was Swiss, and he pushed for the chalet-style clubhouse, built in the early 1920s and renovated in 1998. Since 2023 it's been the Eddie Manderville Chalet, named for the teacher and ambassador who spent more than 60 years at Wirth. He also got the board to ban spiked shoes in 1923. In winter the park turns into cross-country ski trails.
