Columbia Golf Course

A 100-year-old park-board course in Northeast, with the downtown skyline in view and an 1896 steel-arch railroad bridge carrying you over the tracks.

About Columbia Golf Course

Columbia is the Minneapolis Park Board's Northeast course, a few minutes from downtown, and the skyline views come with it. It started as six holes with sand greens around the end of World War I and grew to 18 within a few years; the park board's own page gives two sets of dates. It's par 70 and 6,229 yards from the black tees, on 150 acres of rolling ground with mature tree-lined fairways.

Water comes into play a lot: the scorecard marks lateral hazards on eight holes (2, 4, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13 and 16). A railroad line cuts through the property, out of bounds on 3 and 8, and you cross it on a steel-arch bridge built in 1896, one of only two left standing in Minnesota, rehabilitated in 2016. The course is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.

The history runs deep. The clubhouse, The Manor, went up in 1924 for about $70,000 because the course was turning golfers away. The greens went from sand to grass in 1935 with federal work relief money, and in the late 1960s the course was stretched from 4,600 to 6,200 yards. It was the first Minneapolis course to get a Golf Learning Center, in the 1990s, and there's a simulator now too.

It's one of 5 courses in Minneapolis on Yoink, and Gross National Golf Club is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
