About Gross National Golf Club
Gross is the Minneapolis park board's course, set in rolling hills at the edge of St. Anthony Village. It's a par 71 that tops out at 6,574 yards from the blues, and plenty of people walk it.
It opened in 1925 as the Armour Golf Course. Armour and Company, the meatpacker that owned the land, brought the idea to the park board in 1923, and William D. Clark, who also worked on Wirth, Columbia and Meadowbrook, helped design it. It was the first course in Minneapolis with grass greens and tees. Walter Hagen, an 11-time major champion, played a round there on July 19, 1925, and the course marked that date with a best-ball event in its centennial year.
In 1947 the park board renamed it for Francis A. Gross, a longtime park commissioner, who didn't know it was coming. In 1963 four tees were moved and fairways lengthened ahead of the 1964 USGA National Public Links. It's always been busy: in 1987 it set the city record with 62,000 rounds.
It's one of 5 courses in Minneapolis on Yoink, and Columbia Golf Course is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
