Hiawatha Golf Club

Built in the 1930s on fill dredged to make Lake Hiawatha, it's flat and long with small greens; Minnehaha Creek and 12 ponds run through it.

About Hiawatha Golf Club

Hiawatha is flat, long and tree-lined, with small greens, and water is everywhere: two fairways and four tees sit on Lake Hiawatha, Minnehaha Creek runs through the back nine, and there are 12 ponds. There are only 30 bunkers. It's a par 73, and it plays like one.

The ground is man-made. The park board bought swampy Rice Lake and the land around it for $550,000, largely to build a golf course, and starting in 1929 it dredged more than 1.2 million cubic yards out of the lake. Theodore Wirth used the fill to shape rolling terrain he called more "sporty." The first nine opened July 30, 1934, for 35 cents a round, and the full course opened the next summer. Through the Depression it was the only profitable course the park board had. The front nine was remodeled in 1993 and the back nine in 1999, the year Tiger Woods visited for a junior golf event.

It matters beyond golf. Hiawatha was close to the Southside, one of the few Minneapolis neighborhoods open to Black residents, and it became a home course for Black golfers, including Solomon Hughes Sr. and Jimmy Slemmons, even while its affiliated private club took only white members for decades. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023, and in 2021 the clubhouse was renamed the Solomon Hughes Sr. Clubhouse.

Being built on a filled swamp has a cost. The June 2014 flood closed the whole course for months, and the back nine didn't reopen until 2016. The park board now plans to cut Hiawatha to nine holes to deal with the water, and MPR News reported in August 2025 that work could start as early as 2030, so the 18-hole version has a limited run.
