Como Park Golf Course

Built in 1930 on two dried-up lake beds, and for years peat fires smoldered under the old lake holes. Short and sporty, with few straight putts.

About Como Park Golf Course

Como is Saint Paul's short course, tucked behind Como Zoo and the Conservatory and across Lexington Parkway from Lake Como. It's a par 70 at 5,581 yards from the middle tees (67.5 rating, 122 slope), so it's about the approach and the greens rather than the driver. The city describes rolling, well-bunkered greens with not many straight putts, plus water and elevation changes to keep it honest. Cozy's Pub in the clubhouse has a full bar and food.

The land has a story. The city gave up trying to keep water in Cozy Lake and the northwest arm of Lake Como in the 1920s, and the course went into the empty beds: holes 5 through 9 sit in the old Cozy Lake valley north of the Japanese Garden, and 15 through 18 are on the former lake arm west of Lexington. Paul Coates, the Ramsey County surveyor who designed Keller, laid out the first nine. To buy the hilly tract needed for 18, about a dozen neighborhood clubs staged a carnival in Como Park in 1929, and local business names like Bigelow, Hill and Hamm covered the rest.

It was dedicated May 3, 1930, more than 100 volunteers with hoes and shovels finished it that summer, and about 50 golfers teed off on August 16, 1930, for a 25-cent green fee. Tom Vardon's second nine opened the next year. For several years peat fires kept burning under the old Cozy lakebed; the fire department got called in from time to time, steam rose from the ground in winter, and golfers were said to get a hot foot now and then.
