About Keller Golf Course

Keller is Ramsey County's course in Maplewood, just outside St. Paul, and the county says its history is unmatched by any other public course in Minnesota. It opened in 1929, designed by Paul Coates, a county civil engineer who reportedly toured some of America's great courses to learn the craft. It hosted the St. Paul Open, a PGA Tour stop, from 1930 to 1968, plus the 1932 and 1954 PGA Championships (Olin Dutra and Chick Harbert won) and the 1949 Western Open, which Sam Snead won. The LPGA's Patty Berg Classic came in the 1970s.

Richard Mandell closed it in October 2012 and reopened it in July 2014. He kept the old routing but converted the fairways to bentgrass and replaced every green and bunker, and the clubhouse and pro shop were rebuilt too. Golf Magazine named it the Best Municipal Renovation of 2014, and Golf Inc. called it Renovation of the Year.

It's a course in the trees. The map survey has trees along 14 holes and 11 doglegs, with water near five holes and about 35 bunkers, so shaping the ball matters more than carrying sand. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data. You can take a caddie, which is unusual at a county course: book one at least 48 hours ahead. The Keller Grille and the banquet rooms look out over the course and Keller Lake.

It's one of 2 courses in Maplewood on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Goodrich Golf Course, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
