About Manistee National Golf & Resort

Manistee National is a golf resort in the pines of the Manistee National Forest with 45 holes: two full 18s, a short course added in 2023, and a 42-room inn. The two big courses are built on different ground, and that's the whole point of playing both.

The Retreat came first. Michigan architect Gary Pulsipher designed it in 1993, when it was called Canthooke Valley, and it winds through tall white pine and old oaks on sandy soil. The fairways are generous and there are only a few forced carries, but the moderately sized bentgrass greens are well bunkered and ponds and marsh come into play. From the blues it's 6,517 yards, 71.6 and 134.

The Revenge, once Cutters' Ridge, is the tougher one. Jerry Matthews, who also did the Grand Hotel course on Mackinac Island and TimberStone, laid it out in 1999 on clay, so it's marshes and wetlands instead of sand. From the black tees it's 6,654 yards with a 73.9 rating and a 149 slope, which the resort says is one of the highest in Michigan. There are five sets of tees, down to 4,571, so pick honestly.

The short course runs 463 to 1,044 yards on sandy ground through old oaks and pines, past the walls of a stone house on a hill, with bunkers faced in reclaimed railroad ties.

Twilight, replay, junior and senior rates are lower, and the short course is $49, free for kids under 16 and seniors over 80. Stay-and-play packages are available with the inn.
