About Manistee Golf & Country Club

Manistee is one of the oldest clubs in Michigan. Local businessmen founded it in 1901, when the city was riding a lumber and salt boom and, by the club's telling, had more millionaires per capita than anywhere in the country. They bought 80 acres of the Canfield-Wheeler farm by the lake, Thomas Bendelow laid out nine holes of 2,765 yards, and the first four opened that June. The mills closed over the next decade, and from 1910 to 1928 the club stayed alive partly by selling sand off its own dunes. It bought more land in 1928, and W. Bruce Matthews' 18 opened on July 4, 1931.

It's short: par 70, 5,614 yards from the whites (67.0 rating, 117 slope). Don't let that fool you. Holes 3, 4, 12, 13, 14 and 15 sit on the bluff over Lake Michigan with a links feel, and the breeze off the water changes by the hour. Water hazards, bunkers and rolling ground make it a course-management and iron-play test. The lakeside holes 3, 4, 12 and 13 were rerouted onto the shore and opened in 1992, and a storm washout led to a new elevated 4th tee in 2010 that the club says shows 50 miles of coast on a clear day. The 16th runs beside high dunes, one of the few places out of the wind.

The club became a non-profit membership corporation in 2012, but the public can book and pay green fees. There's a driving range and a 3-hole short-game area for warming up.

Book online from the club's website (it runs on foreUP) or call the pro shop at 231.723.2509. 2026 rates: in peak season (May 16 to September 15) 18 holes before 3 p.m. is $35 walking or $60 with a cart Monday to Thursday, and $55 or $80 Friday to Sunday. After 3 p.m. it's $45 with a cart. In the early and late season (April 15 to May 15 and September 16 to October 15) 18 is $20 walking or $45 riding. Seniors 60 and up get $40 with a cart on Mondays, and groups of 20 or more should call for pricing.
