About Crystal Lake Golf Club
Crystal Lake is two different nines. The front, Bruce Matthews' 1970 design, is open and rolling, with wide fairways through a meadow of cherry and apple trees left from the old orchard, and it plays to almost 3,500 yards from the blues. The back, drawn by his son Jerry Matthews, is tight and winding, with plenty of water and bunkers. It finishes with a 400-yard dogleg right up to an undulating green just below the clubhouse. The lake itself is close by, and the views over it are what the place is known for.
The first owner, Bryce Gibbs, pictured a members-only nine with a swimming pool, but it opened to the public and stayed that way. Arthur Keillor bought it around 1988, and the Keillor family has run it since. In 1997 they took out the old 10th and 11th to make room for a driving range and built two new holes behind it, and in 2010 they added bunkers, rebuilt six greens and redesigned the 4th. They've kept refining the back nine to make it easier on everyday golfers.
