Mines Golf Club

Mike DeVries built it in 2005 on ground above old gypsum mines: 110 feet of fall, only 31 bunkers, and greens that do most of the defending.

About Mines Golf Club

The Mines is a par 70 of 6,701 yards on the west side of Grand Rapids, and the course likes to call it an "up north feel" in the shadow of downtown. The name is literal: the holes sit 150 feet above gypsum mines that were being worked as early as the 1860s. There are 110 feet of elevation change from the top of the property to the bottom, so expect rolling fairways, uneven lies and a few climbs.

Mike DeVries laid it out in 2005, with bluegrass fairways and bentgrass greens. It's lightly bunkered for a modern course, with only 31 bunkers and about half a dozen holes that have none, so the undulating greens do most of the work. Four sets of tees cover the range, and the posted slope is 143, so don't be fooled by the par-70 number.

GOLF Magazine put it on its 2024 list of the Top 100 public-access courses under $100, and the Michigan Golf Architecture Society ranked it the No. 8 daily-fee course in lower Michigan (48th overall) in 2025. There's more to do than the 18: The Pit is a walking-only three-hole par-3 course (55 to 140 yards, $12), built from short-course holes DeVries finished in 2005 that sat abandoned until new owners found them. The Gypsum Grill looks down on the 5th and 9th holes.
