Locals call it Putterham. It's the town's municipal course, open to anyone with no membership needed, and it has been in play since 1933. Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek, a golden-age design partnership, laid it out (the course's own page spells them Styles and VanKleek).
The ground is the story. The course sits on the natural peaks and valleys, and the greens are up on the hills, some on 30 feet of ledge, while the fairways run through the meadows down below, so plenty of approaches play uphill. It's a par 70 of 6,211 yards from the Blues, 5,759 from the Whites and 4,926 from the Reds, and the course expects a four-hour round.
Next door is Putterham Woods, which once served as the town's tree farm; the hemlocks grown there were transplanted all over Brookline. The clubhouse restaurant, Hemlock Grill, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner to golfers and everyone else. Since 2025 the property stays busy after the season too, with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter, Friday concerts on the patio in summer and a HarvestFest in the fall.
