About Ponkapoag Golf Course
Ponkapoag is the state's golf course in Canton, run by the Department of Conservation and Recreation inside the Blue Hills Reservation, and it's 36 holes. The owners of the Redmond Farm hired Donald Ross's firm for nine holes in 1925 and started 18 more in 1930. Ross designed 27 of the 36, which opened to the public in 1936, and his protege William Mitchell added the last nine in 1956. There are two 18-hole courses, No. 1 and No. 2, each with its own tee sheet.
Course No. 1 is the one with the comeback story. Flooding closed a run of its holes in 2003, and they stayed closed for years. The state put more than $5 million into it, and Brian Silva led a restoration from April 2014 to October 2015, working from Ross's handwritten notes from the late 1930s. Every tee was rebuilt, greens 3 through 8 and 11 through 13 were redone, five holes were rebuilt from scratch, the bunkers were reshaped, and new drainage and irrigation went in. The front nine plays 3,298 yards from the blues to a par of 36.
It's a busy place, with more than 60,000 visitors a year according to the state in 2015. The clubhouse has a pro shop and snack bar, and there are adaptive carts for golfers with mobility needs.
