About Newton Commonwealth Golf Course
Newton Commonwealth is an old Donald Ross course ten miles from Boston, and it plays like one: quick greens and relatively narrow fairways, with water and sand bunkers turning up often. The course's own advice is that management beats length here, and plenty of big hitters have found that out. The map survey counts 52 bunkers and 16 tree-lined holes, so keep the driver in the bag when the hole narrows. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.
The history goes back to 1897, when it opened as a nine-hole course called the Commonwealth Club. It grew to 18 holes and was redesigned by Ross, who lived in Newton. It later ran as the Chestnut Hill Country Club, and when that club ran into money trouble in the late 1970s the city of Newton bought it and opened it to the public. Wikipedia lists Sterling Golf Management as the operator and a 67.0 rating with a 125 slope.
After the round, the snack shop is known for the Buddy Burger, with cold beer and a small wine list.
