About George Wright Golf Course
George Wright is the City of Boston's Donald Ross course in Hyde Park: 18 holes, par 70, 6,440 yards. It's not long, but it's rocky, rolling ground, and GOLF.com singles out the par-4 runs at 5 through 7 and 10 through 12. GOLF put it 70th on its Top 100 Courses You Can Play list for 2024-25, and Golfweek named it the 14th best municipal course in the U.S. in 2009.
The build is the story. In the late 1920s a group of Bostonians got control of the Grew estate and hired Ross for what was meant to be a private club. The 1929 crash killed it. In 1932 Walter Irving Johnson, a longtime Ross associate, picked it up as an engineer for the MDC, and the WPA paid for the rest, about $1,000,000 by the time it opened on April 23, 1938. Crews used 60,000 pounds of dynamite on the ledge, spread 72,000 cubic yards of dirt to lift the ground above the swamp, and laid 57,000 feet of drainage pipe. At one point about 1,000 men worked on it.
They also built a six-foot rock wall around the whole 156-acre site and a huge Norman-style clubhouse that cost $200,000. The course is named for George Wright, the Hall of Fame ballplayer of the Cincinnati and Boston Red Stockings, whose Wright and Ditson sporting goods business helped start Franklin Park's course in 1890 and once employed Francis Ouimet. The city took over running it from contractors in 2004, and it was an MGA Amateur qualifying site in 2009.
