Massachusetts Golf Courses & Tee Times

Massachusetts has deep golf roots. Francis Ouimet, a 20-year-old amateur and former caddie, won the 1913 U.S. Open in a playoff at The Country Club in Brookline. The state association, Mass Golf, now counts over 130,000 golfers and 360-plus member clubs. It formed on January 1, 2018, when the Massachusetts Golf Association (1903) merged with the Women's Golf Association of Massachusetts, and it dates itself to 1900, when the women's association began in Boston.

Tee times in Massachusetts are easier to get when you know when they open. Yoink watches 131 public golf courses here, grouped into 3 markets: New England, Southern New England, Northern New England. Choose a market to see every course, then get an alert when a tee time opens or someone cancels.

Who runs public golf in Massachusetts

Public golf here is mostly run by cities and towns, with a small state system. The Department of Conservation and Recreation runs two courses: Ponkapoag in Canton, 36 holes by Donald Ross, and Leo J. Martin in Weston, which is closed in 2026 for construction and reopens in 2027. Boston's Parks and Recreation Department runs Franklin Park's William J. Devine course, from 1896, and George Wright, a 1938 Ross design. Towns give residents a head start: Brookline residents book 10 days ahead instead of 7. Juniors 6 to 18 can join Youth on Course through Mass Golf for $25 a year and play $5 rounds. The Ouimet Fund, started in 1949 by Ouimet's friends and the Massachusetts Golf Association, has given $57 million in need-based scholarships to people who worked at Massachusetts courses.

Getting a tee time in Massachusetts

The season in Massachusetts runs roughly from spring to late fall. The first warm weekends in spring and the cool, dry weekends of fall are the hardest to book.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.
