About Erskine Park Golf Course
Erskine was South Bend's first 18-hole public course. Albert Erskine, Studebaker's president from 1911 to 1933, owned a big piece of the south side, and his family donated it as a golf course, meant to stay one forever. They turned their horse barn into the clubhouse, and the course opened on June 27, 1925. It turned 100 in 2025, and members of the Erskine family came back for the celebration.
It's a par 70 of 6,100 yards over rolling ground, with bluegrass fairways and bentgrass greens. Short, but not open: the map survey has trees lining all 18 holes and about 67 feet of elevation change, with water on only one hole and 27 bunkers in all. The course likes to say that everyone from Arnold Palmer to John Wooden has played here. The manager's story is that Palmer came through, he thinks in 1961, feeling under the weather, and still played the back nine one under. Today the city's Venues Parks and Arts department runs it along with Elbel and Studebaker, and a season pass here gets you onto all three.
