About Blackthorn Golf Club
Blackthorn is a Michael Hurdzan design in South Bend that opened in August 1994. The site is 226 rolling, heavily wooded acres, and the holes run through wetlands, ponds and native prairie grass to broad fairways and tiered bentgrass greens.
It's a long par 72 if you want it to be: 7,136 yards from the back tees, rated 74.6 with a 144 slope. Most players will be happier on the 6,551-yard (132 slope) or 5,961-yard (124) sets, and the forward tees play 5,181. The practice ground is big, with two acres of bentgrass tees, target greens and a short-game area.
The City of South Bend built and ran it until March 2015, when it sold the course for $1.6 million to a group led by its general manager, Tim Firestone. Golfweek named it Indiana's No. 1 municipal course in 2009 and 2013, and South Bend Tribune readers picked it as the area's best course every year from 2003 to 2014. It also hosted the Four Winds Invitational, an LPGA developmental tour event, in the early 2010s.
