About The Dunes at Maui Lani

The Dunes is the only golf course in Hawaii built on naturally occurring dune terrain, and it sells itself as Maui's only links-style course. Robin Nelson designed it with minimal earth-moving, shaping holes to the ground he was given and working around the cultural sites on the land. It opened for visitor play in 1999.

The property is long and narrow, so the holes run either northwest or southeast, and Top100GolfCourses points out that the prevailing wind cuts across them. Expect pot bunkers and grass swales around the greens. The opener is a 350-yard dogleg left where a draw shortens the hole, and the 18th, which the course calls its signature, is a 510-yard par 5 with water down the right that a good drive brings into range in two.
