The Royal is the older, longer of Kaanapali's two courses: par 71, 6,700 yards, and one of only two Robert Trent Jones Sr. designs in Hawaii. It starts at sea level with a 550-yard par 5, runs along the shoreline, then climbs into the foothills of the West Maui Mountains, where the higher holes look out to Lanai and Molokai. Jones used the rolling ground for gently sloping fairways and big contoured greens, so the approach shots and the putting are the test.

The finish is the one to know. The 18th is a 449-yard par 4 with a brackish canal running the full length of the fairway and green, and it plays longer than it looks. Arnold Palmer called it one of the best and most challenging finishing holes he'd ever played. There are history plaques on every tee about Kaanapali, which the course describes as land once home to the royal chiefs of Maui, and Roy's Kaanapali is at the clubhouse for after.

Booking a tee time at Kaanapali Royal Golf Course

The public can book up to 120 days ahead online, with dynamic pricing. The course suggests booking at least 30 days out from December through April and at least 14 days out for weekends. Hawaii residents with a valid Hawaii driver's license can book local rates through the course app or by calling 808-661-3691 (a local adult rate of $59 after 3 p.m. was listed as of September 2026). Tee times include a shared GPS cart, singles and twosomes get paired up in busy hours, and you need to cancel at least 24 hours ahead or you may be charged.
