About Chastain Park Golf Course

Chastain is the City of Atlanta's course in Buckhead, and the skyline is part of the round: the Buckhead skyline shows from many of its rolling hills. It's tree-lined and bends a lot. It started as part of North Fulton Park. In 1940 Fulton County Commissioner Troy Green Chastain Sr. had 268 acres set aside for the park, and WPA labor helped build it, 18-hole golf course included. The county renamed the park Chastain Memorial Park in 1946, and the City of Atlanta took it over in 1952. The course itself was still called North Fulton in 1955.

It's where Atlanta's public golf was desegregated. After the Supreme Court ruled in Holmes v. City of Atlanta on November 7, 1955, the four plaintiffs chose North Fulton for their round and teed off there just before Christmas. There's an older and quieter history here too: a 2014 radar survey confirmed 86 unmarked graves from the old North Fulton Park Cemetery next to the fifth green.
