Bobby Jones opened in 1932 as Atlanta's first public golf course, named for the city's most famous golfer, and Jones himself hit the first tee shot. It's a different course now. The Bobby Jones Golf Course Foundation raised more than $30 million, the City of Atlanta sold the land to the State of Georgia in 2016, and the old 18 became a nine-hole reversible course on 130 acres designed by the late Bob Cupp, with the Old Course at St Andrews as his inspiration.

Here's how it works. There are nine big double greens, each with two pins, and on most days the course alternates between the Magnolia routing and the Azalea routing, played in opposite directions. Between the tee choices and the pin choices, the course says you play a very different loop each time around. For outings they open both nines.

It's also the center of Georgia golf. The Murray Golf House holds the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame and the offices of the Georgia State Golf Association and the PGA of America's Georgia Section. There's the Grand Slam Golf Academy, Boone's restaurant, the Dan Yates Putting Course, and the Cupp Links, a free five-hole par-3 course built for juniors that adults can play too, with a donation welcome at the end. The PATH walking trail runs around the edge of the property.

It's one of 82 courses Yoink watches in the Atlanta area, and the closest alternative is Chastain Park Golf Course, about 5 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.

Book online through the course website. If your time isn't there, sign up for the Virtual Tee Time Assistant, which texts or emails you when a time you want opens up. On the Cupp Links, groups with juniors get the first tee, and lessons have first use.
