About Cleveland Heights Golf Course
The Heights is really three nines, Azalea, Bougainvillea and Camellia, played in 18-hole pairs (A/B, A/C or B/C). Each nine has three sets of tees from 2,600 to 3,200 yards, and the pairings run 5,300 to 6,400. Azalea has the most open fairways, Bougainvillea is the toughest of the three and Camellia is the longest, so pick your pairing to suit the day. It's rolling ground with mature trees, which is more than you'd expect in the middle of Florida.
It opened in the spring of 1925 as the centerpiece of H.A. Stahl's Cleveland Heights development, named for the Ohio developer's hometown, with its first clubhouse on Lake Hollingsworth. The firm of Howard Toomey and William Flynn designed it, Flynn supervised the work himself, and it was billed as long and difficult as most of the northern links. Sixteen of those original 18 holes are still in play, spread across today's three nines. In January 1927 it hosted the first statewide high school golf championship sanctioned by the Florida High School Athletic Association, and it held the event again in 1928.
Stahl's money ran out and the City of Lakeland took the course over; it has owned and run it ever since through Parks and Recreation. In the early 1950s the city turned the land holding the original 7th and 8th holes into a park, two new holes went in during 1955, and the third nine came in the early 1980s. The city marked the course's 100th birthday on November 21, 2025. There's a full driving range, lessons, and The Heights Bar and Grill in the clubhouse, and it's home to the annual 4-Ball tournament.
