About Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne

Crandon is Miami-Dade County's course on the Key Biscayne barrier island, with the Atlantic on one side and Biscayne Bay on the other, about 10 minutes from downtown Miami. It's par 72, designed by Devlin/Von Hagge in 1972 and redone by Von Hagge in 1993, and the water is everywhere: seven saltwater lakes, mangrove thickets, a subtropical lagoon and holes that look out on the bay.

It opens and closes with par 5s. The 1st doglegs and asks for a drive over water and mangroves; the 18th has water down both sides. The hole people talk about is the 7th, a par 4 that doglegs right and has you playing over the water. The course calls it "One of the Greatest Holes in Golf."

The Senior PGA Tour came here for 18 years, and Lee Trevino, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Ray Floyd and Gary Player all played it on TV. There's a lighted range, chipping and putting greens, lessons and rentals.

It's one of 67 courses Yoink watches in the South Florida area, and the closest alternative is Miami Beach Golf Club, about 8 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
