About Miami Springs Golf & Country Club

Miami Springs is a par-71 course a few minutes from Miami International Airport, and it has more tournament history than almost any public course in South Florida. It opened in 1923 as the Miami-Hialeah course, built into the brand-new city by developers Glenn Curtiss and James Bright with a group of local golfers called the Miami Coconuts. The Florida Historic Golf Trail credits the design to William Langford and Theodore Moreau of Chicago. Seminole women planted the grass on the bunkers and canal banks by hand, and Seminole men caddied when it opened.

It's a tree-lined layout where the doglegs and the canals do the work. The map survey counts trees along 15 holes, 12 doglegs, water near four holes (three of them along a canal) and only about 27 bunkers. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data. The par-3 16th is the hole the course calls its signature.

The Miami Open was played here from 1925 to 1955. Arnold Palmer, fresh off his 1954 U.S. Amateur win, made his first start as a pro in the 1954 edition, shot 78-74 and missed the cut; Bob Rosburg won. Palmer came back in 1955, the last year it was held here, and tied for eighth behind Sam Snead. The course also has a harder history: from 1949 to 1957 Black golfers fought a Monday-only rule in court, a case that reached the U.S. Supreme Court before the city dropped the rule.

It's one of 67 courses Yoink watches in the South Florida area, and the closest alternative is Trump National Doral Miami - Red Tiger Course, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
