About Wilson Golf Course
Wilson is the longer of the two big Griffith Park courses, 7,002 yards and par 72 from the black tees (73.0 rating), with blue, white and yellow sets coming down to 5,276. The fairways slope gently through a forested stretch of the park near the L.A. Zoo and the Observatory, and length off the tee matters more here than at most city courses. It shares its clubhouse, restaurant, lounge and lighted range with Harding next door.
George C. Thomas Jr. drew Griffith Park's 36 holes, and Wilson Memorial opened in 1927 with an exhibition featuring Bobby Cruickshank and Ed Dudley. In the 1930s superintendent William Johnson and Billy Bell re-contoured the greens and stretched it for the Los Angeles Open, which Harry Cooper (1937), Jimmy Thomson (1938) and Jimmy Demaret (1939) won at Griffith Park. In 1938 Babe Didrikson played there, the first woman in an official PGA Tour event.
World War II took three holes for the Crystal Springs picnic area and the freeway took more ground in the late 1950s, but the SCGA counts 11 Thomas holes still in play, and says Wilson and Harding are closer to their golden-age form than most Southern California courses. City championships still come here; past winners at Harding and Wilson include Al Geiberger, John Cook and Tiger Woods.
