About Brookside at the Rose Bowl - C.W. Koiner

Koiner is Brookside's No. 1 course, the longer, par-72 championship layout of the two William P. Bell designed in the Arroyo Seco next to the Rose Bowl. It opened in 1928, and Brookside calls itself the oldest golf course in Los Angeles County. It's relatively flat and more open than the Nay course, so the test is bunkers, long rough and tricky greens rather than hills. It's a good walk, with the San Gabriel Mountains behind you.

Map survey data shows trees along 17 of the 18 holes, 48 bunkers and water in play on just one hole, so the trouble is sand and trees, not ponds. Brookside has put about $6 million into the courses since 2003, including a big water feature on Koiner's 6th fairway. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

It has real tournament history. Billy Casper won the 1968 Los Angeles Open here, and Koiner hosted the 1974 USGA Amateur Public Links. The city owns it, and it's run for Pasadena by the Rose Bowl Operating Company. On UCLA home game days and for the Rose Bowl Game the fairways become the parking lot, so check the calendar before you plan a fall Saturday.

It's one of 2 courses in Pasadena on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Scholl Canyon Golf and Tennis Club, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
