Harding Golf Course

George C. Thomas Jr. built it in 1923: narrow fairways, guarded greens, deer in the trees, and a share of three L.A. Opens in the late 1930s.

About Harding Golf Course

Harding is the older of the two big Griffith Park courses. George C. Thomas Jr. designed it in 1923 as the city's second municipal course and its first all-grass one, and it opened on August 11, 1923, named for President Warren G. Harding. Golf in the park goes back further: the first municipal course, a Tom Bendelow sand-green links from 1914, ran under what are now Harding's 17th and 18th.

In the early 1930s the city's golf superintendent William Johnson and architect William P. Bell reworked the courses with federal works money, adding irrigation and building the clubhouse that was done by 1936. Harding and Wilson then hosted the L.A. Opens of 1937 through 1939. Look between the 1st and 17th and you can still find an old par 3 from Thomas's routing that was abandoned in the 1950s.

It plays 6,714 yards from the black tees, par 72, 71.4 rating and 121 slope. The fairways are on the narrow side and the greens are guarded, so position off the tee matters more than length. Deer are a regular sight. Harding shares a clubhouse, restaurant, lounge and lighted range with Wilson next door.
