About Rancho Park Golf Course
Rancho Park is the L.A. city course that hosted the tour, in Cheviot Hills on the west side. It opened with the 1949 USGA Public Links, and the Los Angeles Open was played here from 1956 through 1972 (except 1968) and once more in 1983. LPGA and senior tour events followed between 1978 and 1994; Nancy Lopez won two of them. William Johnson and William P. Bell designed it, on ground that had been the private Rancho Country Club before the city folded it into Cheviot Hills Park in 1945.
The history you'll see is a bronze plaque on the 18th, a 508-yard par 5 that was the 9th in 1961. That's where Arnold Palmer, the reigning Masters and U.S. Open champion, made a 12 in the first round of the L.A. Open after four straight shots out of bounds. Charlie Sifford, the first Black golfer with a PGA card, won the 1969 L.A. Open here in a playoff.
It's 6,839 yards and par 71 from the Blacks (72.8/130), and the city calls it undulating, with varied lies and smallish greens that make the approach shots the test. The map survey counts trees along all 18 holes and no water at all. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data. There's a lighted range, and the clubhouse is being rebuilt.
