About The Club at Starr Pass
Starr Pass is desert golf in the Tucson Mountains on the west edge of town, the course at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass resort. There are 27 holes in three nines, and they cross arroyos and ravines among saguaros with big changes in elevation. Bob Cupp and Craig Stadler did the original 18, and Arnold Palmer later added a third nine and refreshed the rest.
It was the TPC at Starr Pass when the PGA Tour's Tucson Open came here from 1987 to 1996. The big moment was 1991, when 20-year-old Phil Mickelson won as an amateur, his first Tour win. The name changed to Starr Pass Golf Club in 1993, and Troon took over in 2023. The pass itself is older than any of it: Richard Starr ran a stagecoach trail through here in 1884.
The latest restoration put in new TifEagle Bermuda greens and rebuilt the bunkers, cart paths and bridges. The club is an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
It's one of 27 courses Yoink watches in the Tucson area, and the closest alternative is El Rio Golf Club, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
