Silverbell Golf Course

Tucson's longest city course, rebuilt in 2004 when the landfill under it began to sink. Two lakes put water in play on five holes by the Santa Cruz.

About Silverbell Golf Course

Silverbell is Tucson City Golf's river course, on the west bank of the Santa Cruz in the northwest part of town. It's wide open and park-like, with broad fairways, mature pines and flat ground, so it's an easy walk and a forgiving one off the tee. Two big lakes bring water into play on five holes, and the map survey shows eight holes that bend, six of them to the left. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

It's also the longest of the city courses: 6,936 yards from the blues, par 70, with five par 3s and three par 5s. The 7th is a 595-yard par 5 from the back tees. The blues rate 71.6 with a 124 slope, and the other sets play 6,391, 5,843 and 5,235, with combo tees in between.

The course opened in 1979 on an Arthur "Jack" Snyder design, but it was built on an uncapped landfill, and the ground started to sink. In 2004 Tucson architect Ken Kavanagh rebuilt it almost from scratch. Only holes 7 through 10 survive from the original, three of those with new back tees, and the lakes were enlarged. There's a driving range, putting green and two short-game areas, plus lessons, clinics and junior camps.

It's one of 27 courses Yoink watches in the Tucson area, and the closest alternative is El Rio Golf Club, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
