StoneRidge sits in the foothills of the Bradshaw Mountains above Prescott Valley, the golf course at the middle of a 2,000-acre residential community. Randy Heckenkemper, who worked with Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish before starting his own firm in 1985, calls it a desert and mountain hybrid with dramatic elevation changes, and says he went hole by hole to keep the shots from getting too hard, which is where a lot of mountain courses go wrong. Expect valley views with a ring of mountains around you and desert waiting off the short grass.

It's a par 72 that goes 7,052 yards from the black tees (72.3 rating, 142 slope), then 6,392 from the gold, 5,898 from the white and down to 4,953 from the red. Those black numbers play hard, so most people are better off at gold or white. The desert is played under a local rule: a shot into it can be dropped within two club lengths of where it crossed the turf line for a one-stroke penalty, which keeps the four-hour pace the card asks for. Carts stay on turf and cart paths.
