About Pipestem Resort State Park
Pipestem's golf is a Geoffrey Cornish course on a mountaintop in a West Virginia resort state park, routed along the east rim of the Bluestone River Gorge. The state parks describe it as bold tee shots and dramatic elevation changes with mountain views all year. On The Tee magazine adds the detail: narrow, tree-lined fairways and small greens, so it's accuracy more than length, and it plays fair from the forward tees.
The finish is the part people remember. The 17th tee sits right on the edge of the gorge, and the shot is about 185 yards from the back over the edge of a ravine, usually into the wind. The 18th is a roller-coaster dogleg left that climbs steeply to an elevated, false-fronted green that slopes hard from back to front, so take an extra club and stay below the hole. It's a full resort park, with lodging, dining, a spa and a new aerial tramway built for the views, which makes it an easy two-day golf trip.
