Glade Springs Resort - Cobb Course

George Cobb, who worked with Bobby Jones at Augusta, built it in 1973: tight tree-lined fairways, eight lakes and a 16th that crosses water twice.

About Glade Springs Resort - Cobb Course

The Cobb Course is the original 18 at Glade Springs. Austin Caperton Jr. started the resort in the early 1970s after playing George Cobb's courses on Hilton Head, and he wanted Cobb, who had refined holes at Augusta National with Bobby Jones and designed its par-3 course, for his first layout. It opened in 1973, what's now the back nine first and the other nine a year later, after more than a million cubic yards of earth were moved to shape it.

Expect a tight, tree-lined round: fairways bounded by mature trees lead to very large greens with plenty of sand around them. The resort counts 51 bunkers, eight lakes and more than 200 feet of elevation change, and even the fairways tilt more than they look. The hole people remember is the 16th, a 419-yard par 4 that asks for a carry over water to a landing area between ponds, then an approach over the second pond to a narrow, raised green behind a deep bunker.

Tom Clark reworked it around 2003, when he was building Stonehaven next door: he re-outlined fairways, added fairway bunkers and new tees that pushed it past 7,100 yards. From the black tees it's 7,121.
