About Desert Canyon Golf Resort

Desert Canyon is a resort course in the dry country above the Columbia River, and it plays as two different nines. The front is called Lakes, and the course's own pro tips keep warning about water: on the left of the 1st if you go for the green off the tee, and right of the par-3 4th. The back is called Desert, and the problem there is canyons. You carry one to reach the par-3 8th, whose green has three tiers, and you clear another on the approach to the last, where the tip is to be long rather than short. The longest hole on the course is a par 5 on the back nine that the tips call a monster. From the back it's 7,285 yards at par 72, with five sets of tees, so pick the right box.

Jack Frei designed and built it. A Spokesman-Review piece from June 1995 described the grass rising out of the desert near Orondo, watered with Columbia River water pumped from about two miles west, and said Golf Digest had rated it second-best in the state. Homes and condos were planned around it then, and the resort now has a lodge and the CJ's building, with the pro shop, a restaurant, Rattler's Sports Bar and a coffee house.

It's one of 12 courses Yoink watches in the Wenatchee, Chelan & Central Washington area, and the closest alternative is Bear Mountain Ranch, about 12 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
