Washington Golf Courses & Tee Times

Golf came to Washington in 1894, when a dozen British expats in Tacoma founded the Tacoma Golf Club and built the state's first course. Public golf followed in 1915 with Jefferson Park in Seattle, then Meadow Park in Tacoma and Downriver in Spokane. Spokane had the big early events: the 1941 U.S. Public Links at Indian Canyon, the 1944 PGA at Manito and the first U.S. Women's Open in 1946. The state's biggest public-course moment came in 2015, when Jordan Spieth won the U.S. Open at Pierce County's Chambers Bay.

Who runs public golf in Washington

Public golf in Washington is mostly run city by city and county by county; there is no state parks golf system in the sources read. Seattle Parks owns four facilities, run by a private operator under city contract. Pierce County owns Chambers Bay and prices it in tiers, with lower rates for county residents and for Washington and PNGA golfers than for visitors. Washington Golf, the state association since 1922 and a USGA allied association, runs the state amateur championships and USGA qualifiers and handles handicaps for Washington and Northern Idaho. Its foundation backs Youth on Course for junior golfers.

Getting a tee time in Washington

Golf in Washington follows the seasons: spring openers and fall weekends are the busiest stretches, and summer mornings fill before afternoons.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.
