About Heritage Oaks GC

Heritage Oaks is Harrisonburg's city course, run by the Parks and Recreation Department. Bill Love designed it as a par 70 that swings between open, links-style holes and tree-lined ones, and he has said it's one of his favorite designs and one of the toughest to build. Unlike a lot of courses in the valley that were laid out for carts, it's compact enough to carry your bag.

The course is known for its conditioning, with bentgrass from tee to green (L93 on the greens, PennTrio on the fairways), and in 2023 it began a two-year move to bermudagrass on the tees. It soft-opened on September 29, 2001, played ten weekends, closed for the winter and reopened full-time on March 29, 2002. Besides the 18 there's a par-3 course, a practice green and a range.

It's the home course for James Madison University's men's and women's teams, Eastern Mennonite University and several local high schools. In June 2021 GOLF Magazine included it among 25 underrated municipal courses picked by its readers, and Virginia Living readers voted it a best-in-the-valley course in 2021.

The winter rates posted when this was checked were $37 to walk 18 on weekdays ($57 with a cart) and $42 on Friday to Sunday ($62 with a cart). Harrisonburg residents get $5 off the greens fee, seniors 55 and up get $5 off Monday to Thursday, and military get $5 off any day; discounts don't stack. Season passes can cover your greens and cart fees for the year.
