Virginia Golf Courses & Tee Times
Virginia's state golf association dates to 1904, when James Hume of Norfolk Country Club organized the first statewide tournament among four clubs. By 1911 the group was calling itself the Virginia State Golf Association and held its first State Amateur at The Country Club of Virginia. The best-known public course in the state's history is Belmont, just north of Richmond. It opened in 1917 as Hermitage Country Club, a Tillinghast design, and hosted the 1949 PGA Championship, won by Virginian Sam Snead. Henrico County bought it in 1977.

Who runs public golf in Virginia
Public golf in Virginia is mostly run by counties, regional park authorities and nonprofits. In Northern Virginia, the Fairfax County Park Authority runs seven facilities, including Laurel Hill, Twin Lakes and Pinecrest, all open year round, weather permitting. NOVA Parks runs Algonkian, Brambleton and Pohick Bay. Around Richmond, Belmont is now run by First Tee Greater Richmond, which rebuilt it with Love Golf Design: 12 restored Tillinghast holes, a six-hole short course and an 18-hole putting course. The VSGA handles handicaps and course rating, runs a Junior Golf Circuit and supports Youth on Course.

Getting a tee time in Virginia
The season in Virginia runs roughly from spring to late fall. The first warm weekends in spring and the cool, dry weekends of fall are the hardest to book.
Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.
A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.
