The Lakes is the older of Twin Lakes' two 18s, opened in 1967 and run by the Fairfax County Park Authority; the Oaks came along in 1998. It's a par 72 of 6,695 yards, and the county's own comparison is the useful one: the Lakes asks for more distance off the tee, but it's much more forgiving than the tight, tree-lined Oaks. With two courses, a range, a practice area and the Twin Lakes Grill, it's set up for a full day. Plan on 4 hours 30 minutes for 18 and check in 30 minutes before your time. Soft spikes only, everyone carries a bag with at least six clubs, and kids 6 to 11 need a paying adult with them. Lessons are through Eisman Golf Academy.
