About Shenvalee Golf Resort
Shenvalee is a golf resort in New Market with 27 holes in three nines, and every 18-hole round pairs two of them, so there are six combinations to play. The Olde Course is the 1927 original, about 3,000 yards and still on its first routing. The Creek nine (about 3,300) has Smith Creek winding through it, and the Miller (about 3,250) is the one the resort calls a local favorite.
The Olde nine was built by men with picks and shovels, and horse-drawn wagons hauled the dirt. A second nine came in 1964 and a third in 1992, and those were then arranged into today's Creek and Miller courses. There are rooms, a pool and the Miller Grille on site, so it's set up for a golf weekend.
The land goes back to a 1749 Fairfax grant, and it was a family farm until 1926, when Roland G. Hill formed Shenandoah Valley Estates to build a hotel and the valley's first nine-hole golf course. A local schoolteacher, Kizzie Hayes, won the contest to name it. It opened on July 7, 1927, and Bobby Jones stopped by that same year with trick-shot champion Joe Kirkwood in his motorcade. The hotel burned in 1930 and was rebuilt, and during World War II Italian diplomats were interned there.
